What is the best thing to take/use to quit smoking?

My mother has been smoking for over thirty years and has tried to quit many times, but nothing has worked. I was wondering what other people have tried to quit smoking, and what has worked and what hasn’t worked. Please give me as much information as you can, I would very much appreciate it.

  1. i tried zyban (an anti depressant) and that helped me quit the first time. this last time, i used a very mild dosage of generic anti depressant plus i started running. i am up to 4 miles a day and 2 years of not smoking! there is a very good article online to help. i’ll try to find it for u. just a sec…

    also, i used nicotine patches too; they did help a lot.
    i was a 20 year smoker. read the article then read it again!

  2. it,s not what you take. it,s behavior modification. smokers are addicts. you go thru withdrawal. this is very hard to do, as the body wants the drug. you really have to want to quit. my wife, son, father in law ,all quit because they wanted to. my father in law smoked for 50 years. all of his brothers died of lung cancer. big wake up call.

  3. best thing is morning walk / jogging in the early morning for at least 1 hr : it will clear her lungs and she will not have any more urge for smoking….

  4. Like it or not it boils down to self control. She should start a physical activity to help keep her mind off of smoking.
    I found that not smoking for a few hours in the morning that i had less of an urge to smoke through out the day. That helped me cut down to 1-2 a day. The rest was will power.

  5. I was a smoker for 30+ years but quit 1/4/08 by using the nicotine gum. It was difficult but I did it. I chewed the gum for 6 months instead of the recommended 3 months, though. If she drinks (even if it’s occasionally), I would advise her to quit drinking for awhile also. Drinking a beer was always something that triggered me to smoke. Good luck.

  6. The will to quit is the most important ingredient in smoking cessation. However, to help with withdrawal symptoms one can use the nicotene patch system which slowly decreases the amount of nicotene the body gets used to…another way; which worked for me was to go to a detox center some where…liquid diet fast for 10 days; daily colonics, yoga and massage. your mom will quit smoking; take stevia to control urges, relax, loose weight and be more in tuned with her body and what goes in it! 😉

  7. I smoked for 29 yrs and used Chantix. I didn’t take it as long as recommended but it worked for me, some people have problems with it. I haven’t smoked for a year now. Most important is that she really has to want to quit.
