How long does it take to totally quit smoking?

my boyfriend has been smoking for 10 years now, and he has decided to quit last year. but lately he puffs 3x to relieve his chest pains. will this in anyway help him really get the nicotine out of his system?
My bf had smoked for 10 yrs. He stopped Apr 2006. He gradually reduced his consumption until he only puffs 2x a month or whenever he feels chestpains (withdrawal symptoms). It’s been 12months now, is it still advisable to take some puffs once in a while?

FYI he doesnt crave for a cigar. Can last 1 month without a stick. But then when he has chest pains decides to get a puff.

Is this just normal? Or should I tell him to endure the pain and not smoke. Is this possible? Or all quitters get through this pain with the same solution (of occassional puffing) ?

thank you for all those who replied. Really great help for me.

  1. I believe a person must not have any nicotine product at all. Your friend must not smoke or do anything that reminds him of smoking. for at least 2 or 3 weeks. An example of this is his morning coffee, if he smoked during or after his coffee then he should not drink coffee for 2 or 3 weeks. The genetically modified molecules and additives make smoking the same as free basing cocaine, additively speaking. To quit smoking one must take the task as serious as making an ac cute life or death decision.
After 3 or 4 days of no nicotine a person generally looses the physical feeling to smoke, after that it is all mental, that is not to discount mental because the mental feeling to smoke is very strong. but he can work through it by keeping occupied and busy. In about 5 to 10 years I would say he would free of smoking, and allot healthier. Once you quit stay quit and don’t go back not even once or you may have to start all over again. I’ve been there, I smoked and quit at least 4 times, I have not smoke now for over 20 years. I watched my mother die from lung cancer do to years of smoking it was terrible seeing her cough and gasp for tiny bits of air while greenish bloody puss spilled from her mouth. Good Luck.

  2. Not really. Usually takes some one seven tries to sucessfully quit. His chest pain is probably not being relieved by the smoking unless he has anxiety and has psychologically linked relief with smoking. Chest pain actually could be a sign of heart problems which smoking contributes too. Tell him to see his doctor about getting some help with this.

  3. for the given years of smoking he just can stop right there and then… he should gradually do… like if he can puff 20 sticks a day then he has to lessen it 1 stick per day.. until he can manage not to smoke… and it is also for the body..since he’s body is use to have a nicotine on it. so gradual quiting will do…

but remember, its a choice to quit smoking and it takes a lot of determinations.

    Good Luck to you bf…

  4. Quitting smoking can be very hard. There are several methods. You can taper your smoking, get medication to reduce the craving or quit cold turkey. Depends on what works best with your personality. I quit smoking in one day but I had been thinking about it for months, getting mentally prepared. I wanted to quit very badly. The expense ($60/month) plus what it was doing to my health were excellent reasons. Don’t worry if it takes a few tries. I hope he makes it.

Try going to a health food store. There are some homeopathic remedies that are supposed to work pretty good. They didn’t for me but I’ve heard other people have good luck with them.

  5. NO I QUIT IN DEC. AFTER SMOKING 36 YEARS AND I STILL HAVE PROBLEMS BUT SMOKING IS NO GOOD FOR YOU HE NEEDS TO STOP COMPLETELY GO FOR WALKS RIDE BIKES TOGETHER EXERCISE TOGETHER ITS GOOD THAT HE ONLY SMOKED FOR 10 YEARS BUT IN ALL REALITY SMOKING JUST 1 IS NO GOOD
