I have this bad habit now for almost 10 years and I really want to quit smoking, because of the effects nicotine has. What is the best way? Should I set up a time line? I smoke about a pack of cigarettes a day and want to stop as quick as possible.
Stop Smoking | Smoking Cessation
Hi Peter,
it’s great that you want to stop smoking. I have been smoking for about 15 years before I decided to quit. The best thing to do is to get some assistance, only 5% of all people who go cold turkey are going to succeed. But there are many options that can help you to stop your smoking habit.
You can use nicotine patches, gum or talk in groups about your habit, but it is also very important that you don’t do the things you usually do when you smoke a cigarette, for example if you drink a coffee in the morning and have a cigarette… dont drink the coffee anymore, it will make it easier if you break this habits.
What worked best for me was to read different books that a friend suggested who went through the same a year earlier. The one that I think was best is this one: http://tinyurl.com/no-more-smoking . Did you know that it takes an average smoker 4 tries? I was successful at the first try and that is now more then a year ago.
Good luck Peter!
Pick up a new addiction.
when i was trying to quit i’d pop a cough drop in my mouth everytime i needed a smoke.. it helped
The nicotine isn’t really the thing you should be worried about that’s in cigarettes. The best way to quit smoking is to get yourself thrown in jail – worked for me.
Get your dr. to prescribe either wellbutrin or zyban. use it with the patch. i smoked for 23 years, but quit this way 4 years ago.
The best way is to get nicotine gum .
There has been a constant research throughout the world to find an easy and perfect way to quit smoking. Medical science is still conducting a thorough research to discover some perfect ways to help people quit smoking.
Smokers are often confused when it comes to kicking out the habit of smoking. If you are a smoker, and do not have commitment, it will become extremely difficult for you to quit smoking. You will, in fact, be neck deep in this trouble. It won’t be easy to quit smoking in such a circumstance.
But, you will become disgusted with the habit of smoking, with the passage of time. So, what to do in such a scenario? Develop a scare for smoking. Scare develops a sense of fear in your mind about lung cancer and cardiac arrest. In fact, this scare or fear will lead you on the path of victory where you will find yourself in the non-smoking zone one day.
Besides, if there is someone in your family who has had such an experience, you will really have to draw lessons from his life. You will need to act accordingly and take preventive measures to quit smoking. It is very unfortunate though that the smoker takes such steps once the tide has passed over the head.
You could also take the help of nicotine gum. There is an important property of nicotine gum. It absorbs the toxins in the linings of the mouth, throat and stomach. This gives a great relief to the smokers. Cold turkey method to quit smoking is also very common. Some people do not find this method much convenient though.
You need to keep one very important thing in mind. The important point is that there are many options available in the market, but, people do not have the same results. So, be prepared for that!
Just stop … 87% of all people that quit with an aid (like gum, the patch, pills, hypnotism etc) start smoking again within a year. Cold turkey is the only way to go.
hi Peter
well im not sure there is a best way.. there are a number of ways, and unlike another contributor i have seen success using aids such as patches or medications.. what worked for me, has been participation in a support group.. i currently have over 5 years of nicotine freedom..
i am a member of nicotine anonymous, and attend meetings both locally, and on line .. on line voice meetings are as close as your computer, and your welcome to attend before actually attempting a quit..
